&Introduction
Honoring the convention that makes milestones out of specific chronological events, we are happy to be able to share this celebration of forty years in business in the Asian art field with all our friends, without whom this occasion would never have arrived: Those who are collectors, whose patronage has built our business; those in academia, whose knowledge and helped us to cultivate our own and disseminate it to an enthusiastic public; as well as our esteemed colleagues in the trade. Any anniversary is more than just a celebration, however. It is also an opportunity to freeze a moment and examine it from various angles, to analyze whence it has come, and plot the future that will follow it. It is a chance to remember the joys and sorrows that have made us who we have become. It is a time to review successes, to reassess strategies, and to renew commitments.
“Four Decades,” our hundredth gallery exhibition, is a retrospective view of our last fifty gallery exhibitions, as represented in this book. Articles from our first fifty shows were collected in our Twenty-fifth Anniversary book, From the Folks Who Brought You…, published in 1992.
