We are proud to show the works of Shigao Ishii, a contemporary Zen brush and ink artist. Mr. Ishii lives in Japan. We feel that his work continues the proud tradition of Zen philosophy and Chinese calligraphy. His paintings demonstrate cosmic energy as well as human spirit. In 1974 he had a one-man painting exhibition at Imbashi Gallery in Osaka and in 1975 at the Bungei Shuja Gallery in Tokyo. He has published a book on sumi ink painting as well as many articles on haiga painting.

Mr. Ishii was invited to teach at the University of Washington for the 1977-78 school year. He demonstrated haiga painting at the Seattle Art Museum in Seattle, Washington in October 1977. In 1978 he had a one-man exhibition at the Greenwood Gallery in Seattle. Two of his paintings are in the Seattle Art Museum's twentieth century Asian art collection. This exhibition is a one-man show of haiga and zenga abstract calligraphy. Mr. Ishii's works were also included in our exhibition entitled "Moods of Tea", May 9th through June 12th 1981.
