A Long, Long Time Ago...

Ancient objects from China, Japan, Korea, India, Tibet, Western and Central Asia mesmerized them. Paintings, ceramics, calligraphy, writing utensils, Buddhist and Hindu sculpture, bronzes, and royal jewelry aroused their curiosity. They began to gather these treasures under the E&J Frankel Ltd. banner...

Gallery

In 1967, Edith and Joel Frankel founded E&J Frankel Ltd., currently one of the oldest Asian art galleries in the United States. Located at 1040 Madison Avenue in New York City, the gallery occupies the former premises of a bank and incorporates the bank vault in its display area (photo, below right).

Edith Frankel

Although Edith Frankel holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in biology, her fascination with Asia inspired her to become an avid collector and a dedicated educator. In 1970, she founded the Far Eastern Art department of The New School for Social Research in Greenwich Village, New York City. During her seventeen years there she taught courses in Chinese jade as well as general survey courses in Chinese and Japanese art. She was a pioneer in the technique of teaching in reverse chronological order and using actual art objects to instruct. She also coordinated lecture-series courses that featured museum curators and collectors.

Edith Frankel has also taught courses in Oriental Art at Brooklyn College in New York and at Montclair State College in New Jersey. She has lectured at such esteemed institutions as:

  • The Asia Society, New York City and Washington D.C.
  • The American Museum of Natural History, New York City
  • The Ima Hogg Ceramics Society at Bayou Bend, Houston, Texas
  • The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
  • Brandeis University.

She is a prolific writer, having penned many articles and entire catalogues in conjunction with E&J Frankel Ltd. gallery exhibitions.

He is also a member of the Appraiser's Association of America.

Joel Frankel has been a speaker in several lecture series on Chinese and Japanese art at the New School for Social Research, New York City.
